What Could Be Causing My Anal Discomfort?

Anal discomfort is not exactly a pleasant topic of conversation, however it’s important to understand that doctors have heard it all, and yours won’t be surprised or reluctant to respond, so there is no reason to be embarrassed. What is important is that you don’t ignore it.

Surprisingly Common

Anal discomfort is a common complaint. The causes are usually not serious, but the pain can be moderate to severe due to the nerve endings in that region. Sometimes anal discomfort is accompanied by itching, bleeding, stinging, and discharge.

Many of these issues can cause bleeding, but most can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers and warm soaks. Some, though, may need antibiotics or other medications, so consult with Rochester Colon and Rectal Surgeons, P.C..

Major Causes Of Anal Discomfort

Anal Fissures

Fissures are small tears in the thin lining of the inside of the anus. They can be caused by giving birth, anal intercourse, straining during bowel movements, and passing large stools.

Anal Fistulas

With fistulas, a tunnel forms between the anal canal and the outside of the buttocks. These abnormal tunnels form after an infected abscess that has been drained.

Abscess

An anal abscess develops when a cavity in the anus fills with pus. It can become more serious if not treated and can lead to severe pain and bleeding.

Rectal Ulcer

This is an open sore that forms on the inside of your rectum. A rare condition known as solitary rectal ulcer syndrome, occurs often in people with chronic constipation.

Anal Dysplasia

This is a condition where abnormal cells form near the opening of the anus. It does not necessarily mean you have cancer, but it can be a pre-cancerous sign. Symptoms don’t always occur, but if they do, they include pain, bleeding, warts, and discharge.

Fecal Impaction

This occurs when there is a mass of hardened stools in the rectum due to chronic constipation.

Proctitis

This is an inflammation of the lining of the rectum. It causes pain, bleeding and feeling like you have to use the bathroom. This can occur from infections, IBD (irritable bowel disease), STDs, antibiotics, or radiation treatments.

Hemorrhoids

This is a common condition where the veins in your lower rectum and anus swell. They can be either internal or external. Both types will cause pain, bleeding, itching, and swelling around the anus.
